3 businesses that innovated during lockdown and what we can learn from them

COVID-19 has put extraordinary demands on businesses of all sizes. In these unprecedented times, business owners have had to think on their feet to stay afloat.

Those hardy enough to survive have battled hard, rolled with the punches and made the best of a difficult situation.

Whilst some have emerged from the storm of lockdown in better shape than others, it doesn’t necessarily need to be all doom and gloom - many businesses have adapted and not only survived, but thrived in these challenging times. Whilst others have utilised their resources and facilities for the greater good.

If anything the pandemic has highlighted the resourcefulness and entrepreneurial spirit of businesses, not only in the UK, but around the world.

So, without further ado, let’s take a look at three businesses that have innovated during lockdown and what we can learn from them.

BrewDog - giving a helping hand (sanitiser)

BrewDog transformed it’s distillery in Aberdeen to help produce hand sanitiser, not to sell, but to give away to those in need during the pandemic.

The company, which was started in 2007 with the aim of revolutionising the beer industry and completely redefining British beer-drinking culture, did their bit to help out the nation's key workers.

They delivered free cases of hand sanitiser to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary’s Intensive Care Unit, during the shortage of hand sanitiser.

Co-founder of BrewDog, James Watt, proudly showcased the BrewGel on Twitter, receiving an amazing response.

The company donated more than 50,000 units of BrewDog hand sanitiser to the NHS and local charities. And, even though the good folks at BrewDog, were there to give a helping hand, the effects of COVID-19 were sobering. James recently tweeted about the impact that Coronavirus has had on the company's retail revenue from BrewDog’s bars.

So, what can BrewDog’s refreshing attitude teach us? Well, sometimes in business you need to freshen up your approach, and whilst it doesn’t necessarily mean cleaning up your act completely, it does mean thinking about the wider good, the bigger picture, and how you can help your fellow human beings out. We’re all one, and on occasions people have to come before profit.

UFC - fighting against the obstacles

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has adapted and innovated to be able to stage their sporting events during the pandemic.

The company, led by Dana White, sought solutions to problems, and has managed to stage numerous events, albeit without a crowd, since 9th May 2020.

The show must go on attitude drew criticism from a number of quarters, leading some to question whether the media were trying to sabotage the UFC’s return, but the company has made it clear safety is their priority.

But, the challenges of holding a major sporting event during the coronavirus pandemic are huge and the company has done well to deliver their product in the current climate, particularly given their fighters and employees are all over the world.

The UFC has even gone as far as securing a ‘Fight Island’ in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, to ensure the safety of their fighters, employees and stakeholders. And, it seems very strict protocols will be in place.

So, what can we learn from the UFC? Whilst they are a global business, with audiences all over the world, they have consistently seen solutions, and overcome numerous obstacles and challenges to ensure their product and business adapts to the unprecedented situation.

In a sense, they have been pioneering in this pandemic landscape, all whilst putting the safety of those involved at the forefront of operations. They have shown strong leadership in the way they have adapted and rose to the challenge. Something many other sports will have looked to and continue to learn from as sporting events return.

The way in which they have adapted and innovated has also meant that their fans have had something to look forward to and entertain them during these challenging times.

The Bodega - entertaining their digital audience

During the pandemic music venues across the UK have been forced to close their doors. As venues up and down the country were filled with the sound of silence, the plug was suddenly pulled on live performances and club nights.

With live dates being rescheduled or cancelled, music venues found themselves in a precarious position. With a number of small venues already struggling due to a number of factors, COVID-19 could have been, and still may prove to be, the final curtain for many venues.

But, some music venues made the most of their digital audience and set about engaging them. Nottingham venue, The Bodega, made the most of their social media following and curated a series of live performances on their Facebook page.

The performances, which often featured local Nottingham artists, proved a great way to engage the local community and wider audience. The regular feature was a great way to bring their audience together and keep the venue at the forefront of their customers' minds.

Not only did they continue to stage ‘virtual’ gigs, they also encouraged followers to get social in the comments and build on the sense of community.

Thinking on their feet, they also launched a new online store where their usual gig-goers and party people could support the venue by purchasing merchandise.

Not only that, they also sold Bodega Lager vouchers for their punters to purchase that could be redeemed once they reopened.

So, what can be learnt from the good folks at The Bodega? Well, whilst the doors may be closed, the party can still go on, just online. In utilising technology, social media and their online store they gave people a great opportunity to support their business.

Summing up
