Posted 07th October, 2015 by Aliysa

Whether you’re a graphic designer showcasing your portfolio, a photographer or a retailer wanting to show off your products, a photo gallery is an effective way to beautifully display images on your site without overburdening visitors.

The WordPress plugin directory is packed with gallery plugins designed specifically to help you organise and manage your images with ease. I’ve taken a close look at what’s on offer and shortlisted my four favourite plugins below.

Before we get started, bear in mind that uploading high quality images to your gallery may affect the load speed of your site. To keep your site as quick as possible optimise your images for the web. You'll find some optimisation tips in my last post '5 Plugins to Speed Your WordPress Site Up'

Nextgen Gallery

As one of the most popular gallery plugins, you may have stumbled across Nextgen Gallery before. It's widely used thanks to its ease of use and suite of features for managing and displaying images. With Nextgen Gallery you have the option to display your images in either a slideshow or thumbnail gallery and for ease you can bulk upload images directly from your desktop. Other features include a meta data import, sort images, resize, lightboxes and much more.

Photo Book Gallery

For a slightly more unusual way of displaying your images, look no further than Photo Book Gallery’s interactive virtual flip book. It comes with all the standard features you’d expect to allow you to customise user’s experience, including custom start page, speed and navigation options, amongst many more.

WP Canvas

With multiple display options and extensive features, WP Canvas is the perfect plugin for those wanting to display hundreds or thousands of images. You can choose to display your images in either a carousel or thumbnail format, adjusting the number of columns and images you want to display. Further options include captions, size adjustment and more.

Gmedia Gallery

Gmedia Gallery is a multi-media gallery, allowing you to create photo galleries, slide shows and audio playlists all from the one place. It‘s remarkably simple to get up and running and you can quickly upload, categorise and publish images. The interface from which you manage your images is intuitive.
