What is the "Slashdot" effect

This is in reference to the phenomenon whereby a website would be taken offline by a sudden increase in traffic, typically caused by referral visits from popular websites such as Facebook or Twitter, blogging sites, or in some cases malicious intent.

This is a particular problem for shared hosting where specific bandwidth limits are set on a monthly basis and the unanticipated increase in traffic consumes the allocated bandwidth in a short period.

With CPanel in particular, bandwidth limits are tightly enforced by the hosting platform so the account would be temporarily suspended.

In the case of certain malicious attacks, we can employ measures to try and mitigate that but we cannot guarantee that it would be 100% effective.

If you are expecting an increase in traffic in response to a planned campaign or other advertised events, we can set up a page cache to handle that.

To discuss options for page caching, or any other queries you may have in regards to a potential increase in traffic, feel free to send us an e-mail to support@Tsohost.com.
